IBJJF Uniform Rules: No Gi

In the official IBJJF Rules Book, there are over 40 pages of rules, competition guidelines, and competition formats.  The official IBJJF uniform regulations give detailed explanations of what is allowed for both the Gi uniform and No-Gi uniform.

This article focuses on the IBJJF No-Gi uniform and the related rules.  So what makes a No-Gi uniform IBJJF approved?

8.1.16

Shirts and Rash Guards

No-Gi competitors are required to wear an elastic skin tight shirt (also known as a rash guard).  This shirt must extend to the waistband of the athlete’s shorts and cover the athlete’s torso.  The color of the shirt has to be black, white, or black and white.  The shirt must be at least 10% of the color that corresponds with the belt/rank of the competitor.  Black belts are allowed to have a small area with red, as long as it does not incorrectly portray their actual rank.

As long as these requirements are satisfied, both short sleeve and long sleeve rash guards are allowed to be worn.

Linked below are some Sanabul rash guards that can be worn in competition under IBJJF rules:

Shorts

For male competitors, board shorts are mandatory.  They must be black, white, black and white, and/or the color that corresponds with the belt/rank of the athlete.  The shorts are not allowed to have pockets (unless they are completely stitched shut), buttons, exposed drawstring, zippers, or any form of metal or plastic that may harm their opponent.  The length of the shorts are required to cover at least halfway down the thigh, but can be at most 15cm from the knee.  Shorts that cover the knee are prohibited.

Female competitors have the choice between wearing board shorts or compression pants (spats).  Aside from an additional lower body clothing alternative, the same uniform rules apply.  The shorts or compression pants must be black, white, black and white, and/or the color that corresponds with the belt/rank of the athlete.

Elastic, skin tight compression shorts can be worn underneath a competitor’s board shorts, as long as they are colored black, white, black and white, and/or the color that corresponds with the athlete’s belt/rank.  This applies to both male and female competitors.
