The two ways of tying your BJJ belt: Standard vs Super Knot
There are multiple ways to tie a Jiu Jitsu belt. This guide will help you tie your BJJ belt two different ways: the standard tie and the Hollywood knot (also known as the Super Knot).
Standard Tie
Find the middle of the belt. This can be done by taking both ends of the belt and putting them together (make sure there are no twists in the belt when this is done). The middle of the belt will be located on the opposite side of the connected tails.
Close your gi; put your left lapel over your right (your right lapel will be folded over your body first, followed by the left side).
Place the center of the belt below your belly button.
Wrap the belt behind your back, again making sure that there are no twists in the belt. Once the belt is wrapped behind your back, bring the ends of the belt back to the front (center of the belt).
Take the two tails of the belt and connect the right tail to the belt around the waist. Loop the left tail over the right end of the belt and under the belt around the waist. Tighten the belt by pulling the belt ends away from your belly button.
The tail that is higher will go over and under the low tail. This forms the knot on the belt.
Tighten the belt and you’re all set!
Super Knot (also known as: Hollywood Knot)
Close your gi; put your left lapel over your right (so your right lapel will be folded over your body, followed by the left side).
Take one end of the belt and connect it to one hip.
While holding the tail end on your own hip, circle the belt around your waist two times, ending at the opposite hip of the one you started from.
Make sure there are no twists in the belt.
The tail that is on the opposite hip you started from (and the only tail that should be on the outside of the belt at this point) will loop under and over the belt at the waist.
Bring both tails to the front (under your belly button) and tighten the belt.
Put the higher tail through the loop on the other side of your body (in between the inside and outside layers of the belt). Doing this should create another loop with the high tail.
Bring the other tail through the loop just created by the high tail.
Tighten the belt and you’re all set!
